Balayage is a freehand hair colouring technique in which sections of hair are hand-painted with a lightening agent, often against a backing board. After painting, each section is wrapped in cellophane. Unlike traditional highlights, Balayage is applied less systematically, creating broader, softer, and more natural-looking tones. The result is a casual, sun-kissed finish and a perfectly effortless hairstyle.
A light toner is applied after bleaching or lightening to neutralise unwanted brassy tones.

The Italian Shatush is a freehand colouring technique that involves gently backcombing sections of hair before applying colour, so that only part of each strand is exposed. Similar to balayage, it creates a soft, natural transition of colour from root to tip. There are four main types of highlights: foil highlights, hair painting, frosting, and chunking. Highlight techniques also vary in longevity: temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent. Hair lightened with bleach or permanent color will remain until new growth appears.

A perm involves the use of heat or chemicals to break and reform the cross-linking bonds in the hair’s structure. The hair is washed, wrapped around rods or forms, and then treated with a waving solution. This solution softens the inner structure of the hair by breaking some of the protein bonds, allowing the hair to swell, stretch, and reshape itself around the rods. Once neutralised, the new shape is locked in place, creating lasting curls or waves.
The same chemical process can also be adapted for hair straightening or relaxing.
